Jeopardy Categories

If I were on the show Jeopardy my 7 topics would have to be:

1. Ironing 101 (I have yet to meet someone who irons more than me!)
2. High School Musical (call me lame but I love it!)
3. Traveling on a Budget (I am always travling &for really cheap at good places!)
4. Food Photography (I'm always taking pictures and alot of food for some reason...maybe I'll become a cook book photographer)
5. Harry Potter ( love the books)
6. How to write a paper in 1 day (I'm a huge procrastinator but it's how I work)
7. CLUE (I own at this game...I have 13 different versions...trust me you wont win)

Blog Reflection

I do have to admit that when we were told that we would have to post our papers on a blog I wasn't too thrilled. I am all for blogging and putting my opinions out there because I'm a very opinionated person and love to hear what others have to say and if they disagree with me or agree. But when it comes to my writing school papers I guess I'm just so used to that being between myself and the professor. This blog wasn't too bad though. No one was negative in the least and everyone was really supportive of each other. I think alot of us were actually suprised how many others thought that our topics were cool and interesting. I also think it helps people who don't like to talk in class feel more involved because they can just talk to you via comments in your blog. I will probably start a new blogger in a few weeks just so I can post my random thoughts and what not. Overall I really enjoyed this part of the class.

If I had to redo any assignment it would probably be the project 2 essay. I would put more effort into it and get better sources and whatnot.

Title: Sammy’s Solar Show
Complete Show Length in Minutes: 15 minutes
Episode 1: Topic: NASA Launching Probe to Map Solar System
Intro Music Clip: Title: Third Rock From the Sun- Joe Diffe Minutes: 10 sec
Intro: Space craft Minutes: 3 minutes
Hello! I am Samantha Elliott and I love talking about space! On October 19, 2008, NASA launched the Interstellar Boundary Explorer. The spacecraft is the first of its kind and will go all the way out to map out the outer edge of the solar system. This is similar to the Voyager I and Voyager II but will do more complex things and go further.
Segment Music Clip: Title: Walking on the Moon-Police Minutes: 20 seconds
Segment: What is the Spacecraft Doing? Minutes: 5 minutes
The spacecraft is heading farther than a spacecraft has gone before. It’s going to a place where the most dangerous cosmic rays are. The spacecraft will send back the first ever pictures of the heliosphere, which is a bubble that protects us from the dangerous cosmic rays. The solar winds in the heliosphere are the weakest that they have been in 50 years. The hope is that the spacecraft will be able to help us understand why this is happening. The IBEX will send back pictures unlike anything that we have ever seen in our solar system. David McComas is a scientist working on the mission. He said, "IBEX will let us visualize our home in the galaxy for the first time and explore how it may have evolved over the history of our solar system."
End Segment Music Clip: Title: Space Odyssey- David Bowie Minutes: 20 sec
Ending: The Endless Frontier Minutes: 5 minutes
This space exploration is unlike anything that we have ever experienced before. Robert MacDowall, another scientists working on the mission, said, "the solar system’s frontier is billions of miles away." He is so right about that. We cannot physically travel all the way out there ourselves. We have to rely on the spacecraft to do it for us. It will take years for the first pictures to come back but when they do they will be astounding. I am so excited to be able to have a chance to see these pictures and everything that comes out of it. You should be too. This is something that will change science around the world and we all get to be a part of it.
Ending Music Clip: Title: Telestar- Tornados Minutes: 1 minute

The Solar System’s Frontier
On October 19, 2008, NASA launched a spacecraft into space. This spacecraft was unlike any other that NASA has launched before. This spacecraft did not have any astronauts on board; it was on a mission. The spacecraft was the start of a project to help study the outer edges of the solar system.
The spacecraft, called Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) was launched from a rocket above an island in the Pacific. If everything goes smoothly, then the IBEX will become the first spacecraft to complete a feat like this. To do something in "a place where solar wind smashes into the gases from outside the solar system."
The region that the spacecraft is heading toward is where the most dangerous cosmic rays lay. "No one has seen an image of the interaction at the edge of our solar system where the solar wind collides with interstellar space," said David McComas of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. According to ABC’s website, solar wind is "a stream of charged particles spewing from the sun at one million miles per hour," and "carves out a protective bubble around the solar system. This bubble, known as the heliosphere, shields against the most dangerous cosmic radiation that would otherwise interfere with human spaceflight."
The solar win, for reasons unknown to scientists is at the weakest wind pressure it has experienced in over 50 years. Hope is that the space probe will be able to tell us why. Scientists suspect that the heliosphere could be shrinking.
The spacecraft will send back astonishing photos unlike anything that we have ever seen. We cannot travel that far ourselves, so we have to rely on the spacecraft to do it for us. "The Solar System’s Frontier is billions of miles away, so it’s difficult for us to go there, but interesting things happen at boundaries, and with IBEX, we will see them for the first time," said Robert MacDowall, an IBEX Mission Scientist. McComas added that, "IBEX will let us visualize our home in the galaxy for the first time and explore how it may have evolved over this history of the solar system."
I am so excited for this mission to continue. We all should be. The pictures that this spacecraft comes back with are going to change science, as we know it. It will come back with pictures we never could have imagined and help us to understand the solar system as a whole and figure out exactly where we fit. We should all be happy and excited to be a part of this.

Activity IV: Visualizing "Isms"

Visualizing "Isms"
This project was probably one of my favorite projects that we have worked in for this class. I enjoyed finding my own meaning in the definitions and finding pictures to go along with them.
The most difficult image to find an image for I would probably have to say was Geocentrism. Geocentrism is the belief that the Earth is the center of the universe and was thought that way by the church for quite some time. A bunch of the pictures I found were book covers saying that the church is right and I didn’t want that. The picture that I found I really like. It’s the Earth with planets around it and the Earth is flat. When people though Geocentrism was correct, some also still thought that the Earth was flat. So I really like that picture and think it really goes with the definition.
Bonism was probably my favorite slide. Bonism is the "doctrine that the world is good but not perfect." For this slide I chose a picture of a large rock in nature with a large crack down the middle. It just shows that nature can be beautiful but still flawed. Two more favorite slides were optimism and pessimism. The two had opposites of the same picture. Optimism had a picture of a dark cloudy sky with a painter’s palate where someone had painted a bright sunny sky. The pessimism slide showed a bright sunny sky with a painter’s palate where someone had painted a dark cloudy sky. I really liked how the two fit together.
While deciding on images I took an audience into consideration. I wanted creative pictures that I felt went a little deeper into the definition but were still easy for someone else to understand without having me explain it to them.

Podcast Topic

Earlier this year NASSA launched a space probe out into space. The destination of the probe is the very outer edge of the solar system. The plan is to map out space so we can have a better understanding of what is out there. Hopefully the probe will be able to get better pictures of Pluto since we do not have very clear pictures. I am fascinated with learning about space, so I am excited to do more research on this topic. This topic will have a long lasting impact because it takes 9 years to get to Pluto. The solar system stretches farther than that so we will be hearing about this for years to come.

Personal Blog

So I thought that my personal blog was already up. Apparently not....here it is.

One of the most controversial issues that I know of is the issue of gay marriage. I do not believe people will ever stop arguing about this topic. I know I wont. Not until ever last state legalizes gay marriage and gay rights will I stop fighting.
It just confuses me so much that people are so against it. I know so many argue that marriage is between a man and a woman. The last dictionary that I looked in said "a union between two people." People just need to start learning to accept change. Whether you like gay people or not they’re out there and they always will be. There’s nothing you can do about it. You can’t help who you fall in love with and no one should have to.
I don’t see any sense in a gay couple paying thousands of dollars extra for 2 separate insurance’s through their companies just because the state wont recognize them as a couple. It’s sad when someone’s life partner doesn’t have any say so in what happens if a life or death matter comes up in the hospital because the state wont recognize them.
People say that gay people can’t be parents and that I really don’t understand. Everyone saying that children need to grow up in a "real" household. Who are we to define a "real" household especially in this day and age? How many people actually grow up in a household with a mom and dad? I was fortunate enough to be able to do that but I know several people who were not as fortunate. Just because a child is raised by two girls or two guys does not mean that they are any less of a person. Gay people, in some cases, will be much better parents than a few guy-girl couples that I know.
I guess I’m just tired of people being so judgmental. Learn to accept people as they are and don’t discriminate. We live in a world where you should be able to be who you want to be without worry that you will get discriminated against. I think that eventually gay marriage will be legalized so we may as well accept it now. Also one more question. For those of you who are so anti gay people but also anti abortion here's my question. Would you still fight for the rights of the fetus if you knew that they were going to grow up gay?

Project 2 Essay
Question: Why do girls feel the need to express themselves so openly on myspace?
Answer:
IF you look at a typical girl’s myspace page, they will be filled with pictures and an "about me" filled with extreme details of their life. Sure there are some exceptions, but these are typical pages. Most girls’ pages that I looked at had immense details in this particular section. Studies also show that females are using myspace profiles in larger numbers than males are.
The Gender Differences in "Social Portraits" Reflected in Myspace Profiles by Melissa Joy Magnuson and Lauren Dundes, helped me to understand why this was a little better. The article explains how girls feel that they always have to explain to society exactly who they are. Boys feel more complete for the most part. Their profile pages will usually be simple and to the point. They will not usually go into too much detail about their everyday lives because they already feel whole and do not have to tell society who they are.
Girls feel the need to always be telling everyone exactly who they are. I think that because girls feel the pressure, especially in high school, to life up to certain standards so they will make sure that they portray themselves that way. Girls will be more likely to change their "about me" more often if they feel they are falling outside of the norm that society expects.
When it comes to relationships, girls are definitely more open. 37% of females mentioned their significant other between two and ten times in their about me section compared to the 14% of males who did. In their interests section, 67% of males who were in a relationship made no mention of it whatsoever, whereas 47% of females did. In the relationship aspect, it seems like you’re "cool" if you have a significant other. Certain studies show that females are quick to change their status quickly if they enter or end a relationship. Females also feel the need to connect their career goals with their family goals.
All in all, I think females are caring too much about what society thinks and trying to fit into the norm. I don’t see the point in trying so hard to get someone to like you. Society should just accept people as they are. I have both a myspace and a facebook and both say that I am in a relationship but I do not mention my significant other or post pictures of him everywhere because I don’t see the point. Your personal love life should not be plastered for the world to see. Females just need to stop thinking so much about what society thinks.

Activity III

Technology is something that is big all around the world today. A good portion of people think that the younger generation is the ones who are so tech-savvy. However it seems if you ask the younger generation, they will beg to differ on how technology advanced they really are.
Vaidhyanathan says kids have grown up with the internet and are “accustomed to the entire world being only a mouse click away.” I do agree with this point. Most teenagers I know, myself included, will google anything that we do not know thinking that the vast inter-web holds all the world’s answers. Vaidhyanathan also says how the young generation will avoid the library and this I do not agree with. Personally, I would normally choose the library over internet research. I do use google to find spur of the moment things, but I would really prefer to be in a library surrounded by books when I am doing research. After all, anyone can make a website; not everyone can publish a book.
I do no believe that technology driven education is a “one size fits all.” Vaidhyanathan makes some very good points. “Every class has a handful of people with amazing skills and a large number who can’t deal with computers at all,” says Vaidhyanathan. Personally, I can work word, excel, and power point, save and upload documents to emails, and work my way through most of the internet. But asking me to do more than that is really pushing it. At the beginning of the semester I didn’t even know how to do a screen capture!
Vaidhyanathan also says that college students are not as “digital” as most think that they are. Being a college student I really have to agree with this. Most people think that us college students have all the high tech advancements and can do anything in the snap of a finger. I have said it before and I will say it again, I am not tech savvy and I do not have the high tech advancements. Most of us really cannot afford it. We are college students after all. I certainly cannot afford a MAC or an IPhone. Vaidhyanathan says how all the talk of people who were “born digital” completely bypasses the norm of college students. “What do we miss when we pay attention to only the perceived digital prejudices of American college students,” asks Vaidhyanathan.
The truth is we miss a lot. If you just pay attention to the richest college students in the country then you are looking at a very small group. Sure you will have a few kids maybe in each class who pull out their MAC and Iphone, but if you really look at a typical college class, you will see students pull out their Verizon Samsungs and pen and paper to take notes. Typical college class.
As Vaidhyanathan goes on to explain in the article, my generation is known as the technology generation though wrongly named as a lot would agree. My dad can dance circles around me in the computer world and he was born in 1960. Yet why isn’t his generation named the technology generation? All in all, I agree with the points Vaidhyanathan is bringing up. My generation does have technology all around us but that doesn’t necessarily mean that we have access to all the forms. And like I said, sometimes traditional modes are just easier.

Project 1

The problems we face in America are something that we can all relate to, especially if we focus in on just Michigan. If you look around though, it is not just Michigan having economic problems; it is America as a whole. I have friends in several different states and they too talk of job loss, economic problems, etc. America is supposed to be this superpower nation; the place where everyone wants to go. The place that will make your life complete and all your wildest dreams will come true. Then why are so many of us suffering due to the economy? Why do so many of us go to work everyday fearing that it could be our last? My project is going to be geared toward what American can to do make sure our people are not suffering. My main argument is simple- stop helping other countries so much! I understand that we are the huge superpower and we want to help and feel the need to. But there's a time where enough is enough. My argument stems off of the song The Americans by Byron Mcgregor. If you haven't listened to this song, listen to it. Maybe my major in history is the reason that I love it so much but it really hits home. This some was written in the 1970's I believe but the argument still stands today. America helps too much. We rush to other countries aide sometimes without them even asking! How many countries would rush to help us? How many countries are in debt to us. Will we ever see a penny of that again? Probably not and we're not fighting for it, we just let it go. The war in Iraq is a really good example. I personally believe that we are not fighting for the effects of 9-11 anymore. Right now we are trying to force our government on them saying that it will make them a better country. Who are we to say who's government is better? True, it wouldn't be good if they went communist or anything but why are we so great? We are paying for everything over there. Building their country from the bottom up and Iraq is not spending a single penny. Add on that we're buying their oil and that country is banking. And America? We're broke. We spend so much on the war when it could go to better uses. How many people in America don't have health care? How many parents have to work several jobs just to provide food and a place to live for their families? How hard is it to go to college because it's so expensive? I feel like I've rambled on long enough. So to end this, my project will be a powerpoint basically touching on these subjects again and ways that America can start to look out for our own good and stop worrying about everyone elses!

Activity 2-Song

The song that I chose for Activity 2 is a Taylor Swift song called "Mary's Song" and also known as "Oh my my my." I chose this song because it reminds me very much of my boyfriend and I since we have known each other our entire lives. I chose the first verse of the song because I like how it talks about the two people knowing each other their whole life. The song I had originally chosen was "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel because I love that song but I'm not too compuer savy and couldn't do anything cool with it. All I can do really is change the font and that doesn't look too good with "We Didn't Start the Fire." I figured that this song looked better with just a few font changes and no fancy backgrounds or colors or anything like that. I love Taylor Swift and although she is country, she seems to be a very girly girl so I decided to choose fonts that have a feminine vibe I guess is how you would say it. Alot of the fonts are written in a cursive type writing. I made all of the fonts at least a size 18 I believe it was, most of them being much larger than that because the cursive fonts showed up so small. I hope that my readers enjoy my song choice.

Screen Capture

My screen capture is from when I was working on a paper of the assassinations of the 1960's for another class. I have Microsoft Windows opened with the actual paper and Internet Explorer opened with a website about Martin Luther King Jr. Behind that I also have a window opened with Myspace. I think that working on the computer like this has its advantages like being able to do things so quickly with the internet, yet it's also very easy to get distracted because of things like Myspace, Facebook, etc. Even with the distractions though I do believe that this is the most convienent way to do work. If you had all this out in front of you it's very easy to lose things and be unorganized. If everything's just on one screen with different tabs it's easy to know where things are and where you stand on your homework.

Interesting Composition

The interesting composition that I chose was actually a video. The video is of Bobby Kennedy's speech to the public just moments after he was informed of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Bobby knew how upset the crowd was going to be, especially the African Americans in the crowd. He went up there without any speech prepared and gave one of the most wonderful speeches that I have ever heard. Most of the crowd reacted with the same schocking scream and then fell silent waiting for Bobby to give them information. I think that it is amazing how he made that speech up right on the spot and even went as far as quoting his favorite poet. He told the people how he knew how upset they were but they musn't act out in anger. He explained to the African Americans how even though they were upset because a white man killed Martin Luther King Jr, he too had a family member killed by a white man and he was not acting out in anger. That 1960's was a very rough time for Americans and Bobby wanted to try to bring everyone together and work for the better.
